Southern Jam is back in 2018
It may be mid-winter in Marlborough, but here’s a #brilliant reason to get out and about… The Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival is back in town this August! The only event of its kind in the South Island; it’s a great opportunity for young musicians to learn from other great, well-respected musicians; and for you to be among the first to experience the South Island’s next wave of musical talent, as well as supporting Marlborough’s emerging musical superstars!
This year we have some fantastic new venues as well as old favorites where the public can attend for free, and soak up all that jazz! Find a free performance on one of the Marlborough venues, click here
The competition culminates in the exciting Gala Concert, held at the world class ASB Theatre, this will be a very special experience for both audience and performers. The concert will showcase pieces from all participating schools, feature the All-Stars Band compiled from the TOP musicians of this year’s festival as well as offering the opportunity to see the judges band – all national and international artists who have performed around the world.
Proudly brought to you by Marlborough 4 Fun with key sponsors KBB Music and the ASB Theatre, Marlborough.

Music makes you feel good
Many a song includes the lyrics “music makes me feel good”, so in the spirit of making sweet music, we thought we’d share three reasons why cool notes, smooth lyrics, and lively rhythms are important things for young people to have in life.
- Music allows for freedom of expression – Let’s celebrate the next generation and give them an opportunity to be who they want to be through the medium of music. The social pressures on our young people are greater than ever, let’s help them connect with themselves and support their music-making.
- Music is therapeutic – It doesn’t matter whether it’s a smooth ballad or ripping rhythm. Music can help a kid to vent or calm down, relieving stress for them and you!
- Music inspires – Music triggers emotional, memory and motor centres, inspiring brilliance and creativity.
Be part of this ever evolving and exciting event and let music may YOU feel good!
