George Cleghorn was a progressive and a scientific surgeon who, despite living and working in a very small New Zealand South Island town, became recognised as perhaps the foremost surgeon of his time nationally. His surgical results were exceptional for the time, enabled by his practice of antisepsis. Furthermore, his awareness of the complications caused by drains was perceptive. He was receptive to new ideas and adapted his practice accordingly, experimenting with the possible immunological stimulation in cancers. He was referred patients from colleagues throughout the country and asked to travel to assist colleagues with operations elsewhere. He was the preferred surgeon to operate on the Prime Minister in 1893. He was elected as the first President of what became the New Zealand Medical Association.
He was compassionate and prepared to challenge his Hospital Committee to admit patients for treatment whether European or Maori. He was intimately involved with the community, supporting and serving many sporting organisations.

Stephen Vallance (M.B, Ch.B., MD, FRCS(Edin), FRCS(Eng), FRACS) was elected to the NMDHB in 2016. He is a retired general and vascular surgeon, who worked at Wairau Hospital in Blenheim for 24 years.
He has served on a number of professional and non-professional committees including as President of the New Zealand Association of General Surgeons.
Stephen spent five years working as a locum at mostly rural Australian hospitals, including a stint as a flying surgeon in Queensland.
